We've just added lots of new dates to our website for our 2010 schedule, and if you haven't been to one of our workshops yet, check it out and see if there is one on near you. VISIT OUR SITE HERE.

You can always drop us a line (via the above link) and register your interest for upcoming workshops.

We've also just added a downloads page to our site, which contains a downloadable PDF form that holds essential information, in case of an accident. An ideal thing to print out and throw in the glovebox!

Women on Wheels workshops

Anyone who has attended one of the genuine Women On Wheels nights knows what a great experience they are and that the nights are all about knowledge and safety. It’s come to our attention that there are imposters out there!!! Yes it’s true. We list EVERY GENUINE Women On Wheels night on our web site so if you see something advertised that looks like ours and you want to make sure please check our web site.

A genuine Women On Wheels night will not try to sell you anything nor do we actively promote any product or company. We can’t say that about any night that we are not involved with.

We cannot stop anyone from running workshops similar to our own we can only advise that if you want the true Women On Wheels experience that you attend the genuine. Any information collected by us IS NOT SOLD OR FORWARDED TO THIRD PARTIES.

The genuine Women On Wheels nights are run with the participants in mind, we do at different workshops have the pleasure of different companies sending representatives to assist with the workshops but they aren’t there to sell you anything. Take Dandenong Hyundai recently as an example. Both Khumo and Castrol sent representatives along for the night and they were at the relevant workstations, they did an outstanding job of offering information and advice without anyone being given the hard sell. If anyone asked (and I’m sure they did) why their product was so good of course they answered but they didn’t offer without being asked. Isn’t that the type of environment that sounds comfortable? Yes, it is, and it’s the only environment we here at Women On Wheels will accept.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming workshops. Please continue to visit our web site often as we regularly update with new workshop dates.

Top Ten Tips

1. Check your tyre pressures every 2 weeks, this will maximise the tyre wear and end up costing you less at the fuel pump, not to mention tyres. Correct tyre pressure will also optimise your vehicle’s handling for greater driving safety.

2. Never let your petrol get lower that ¼ tank. If you consider ¼ tank to be your ‘new empty’ you will never run out of petrol, which not only could compromise your safety, but it is not good for your fuel tank and fuel pump to run dry.

3. Lock all of your doors whenever you get into your vehicle. This will keep you safe from any potential car jackers or thieves who might want to steal your handbag from the front seat. It also can increase the structural integrity of your vehicle in a ‘rollover’ accident by preventing the doors from flying open.

4. Check your wiper blades regularly. The wiper blade rubber can perish easily and if you leave it until the next time you are driving in heavy rain, you may not be able to see properly. In addition, do not add anything to the wiper washer water except the correct water conditioner, as things such as detergent etc. can actually perish the wiper blade rubber.

5. Assemble an emergency break down kit and keep it in your car. These should include: Torch, WD40, emergency Tyre Sealer, Petrol Can, Jumper Leads, Oil Container, Water Bottle (2 Litres), First Aid Kit, Wet weather Jacket, Reflector Signs or Triangles, Ground Sheet, Wheel Chocks.

6. Check your tyre wear each month. Locate the tyre wear indicators on your tyres and track the tyre wear. If you regularly rotate and balance your tyres you will get maximum life from your tyres.

7. Check your spare tyre and jack kit and make sure that all the components are where they should be and the spare tyre has the correct pressure. Don’t find out your spare is flat or your jack is incomplete when you are parked on the side of the road somewhere with a flat!

8. Regularly check that all of your tyres have valve caps. These tiny inexpensive items can save you money and extend tyre life! Without valve caps, tiny pieces of dirt can penetrate the tyre valve and cause a slow leak of tyre pressure, thus impacting on tyre wear.

9. If you vehicle does overheat, do not put COLD water into the radiator or reservoir. Wait until the engine cools and put room temperature water in.

10. Find out what brand, grade and type of oil is being used in your car, and continue using the same oil for oil changes and top ups. Different grades of motor oil, ie synthetic vs mineral do not mix well and could cause serious engine problems.

New drivers

If ever there was an article that made parents of P Platers shudder it was today. According to the Tasmanian coroner a young life was lost and his friends were horribly injured because he was trying to save petrol. It's frightening just how unprepared our young drivers can be for their adventures on our roads. This young man was obviously unaware of some of the features of the vehicle and when he turned the engine off while he was moving he inadvertently robbed himself of the ability to manoeuvre his car. Coroner Rod Chandler said "I am satisfied that it occurred in this instance not because the deceased was being foolhardy or irresponsible but rather because of his ignorance of its effect upon his capacity to manage the
vehicle."

I encourage all parents to educate their children on more than just the road rules, correct driving procedures, and how to pass the licensing test.

The Women On Wheels workshops are an ideal way to address vehicle knowledge with our younger drivers. Many parents feel that they are they last ones their kids listen to because, well you're their parents, so you don't need to tell them, we will. Send them along to one of our workshops, it's free, educational, and you might just be saving their life.

We take all drivers - Learner Drivers, P Platers, experienced drivers, young men and women, and more mature drivers. We happily accept registrations from both men and women, and for the men out there that are wondering if they should come of course you should, as long as you don't mind being surrounded by a whole workshop full of wonderful ladies!

Take care out there everyone, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our workshops soon.
